概要
地獄谷野猿公苑は長野県北部にあり、冬には多くの雪で覆われる豪雪地帯です。
サルの種族は熱帯や亜熱帯地域に生息し、日本のように雪の降る地域に生息する種は珍しく、ニホンザルは「スノーモンキー」と呼ばれます。
＊ニホンザルはヒトを除く霊長類の中で最北端に生息する種であり、北限は青森である。
海外から多くの観光客が訪れる昨今、冬の厳しい雪の中、懸命に生きるサルたちの姿はまさに「スノーモンキー」の言葉通りであり、今では地獄谷野猿公苑のサルを示す言葉となっています。
地獄谷のサルたちは、公苑職員の餌付けの誘導によって「朝山から下りて来て、夕方山へ帰る…」という生活を続け、日中に公苑に訪れるものの、昔からの山での野生生活を変わらず行っている。
地獄谷野猿公苑は檻などがない環境の中でも安全に、その興味深い生態を観察できる場所です。冬の温泉に入る姿も印象的だが、あくまでサルたちの生活ワンシーンにしか過ぎず、四季を通して様々な姿や行動を楽しむ事ができます。
Summary
Jigokudani Monkey Park is in northern Nagano Prefecture. In the wintertime, the snow blankets the area. Monkey species generally inhabit tropical and subtropical regions, so a species that inhabits a place where snow falls, such in Japan, is unusual. The Japanese monkey is called the “snow monkey.” *Not counting humans, Japanese monkeys are the furthest north living primate species, with the northernmost limit being Aomori. Many tourists from overseas have come to visit in recent years, and the snow monkeys live up to their name, risking their lives in the cold winter snow. Now, the term snow monkey refers to the monkeys at Jigokudani Monkey Park. Lured by food from park employees, the Jigokudani monkeys come down from the mountains in the morning and return in the evening. They have continued this lifestyle, and though they visit the park in the daytime, they still live wild lives up on the mountain, as they always have, ever since ancient times. Within the Jigokudani Monkey Park environment, which has no cages, there are places where you can safely observe this fascinating ecosystem. While the sight of the monkeys in the hot springs in winter leaves a strong impression, it is not the only scene that encapsulates the lifestyles of the monkeys. You can enjoy watching them in various states and doing various activities all year-round.

地獄谷野猿公苑は、ヒトと野生のサルとの調和を目指し、成し遂げた人たちがいて、そういった歴史も含めて、本当に素晴らしい所だと私は思います。サルたちを柵などで閉じ込めることなく、自然のままのサルたちを間近で観察する事の出来る日本一の所だと思います。
